Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics granted approval to establish postdoctoral research workstation

The Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics has recently received approval to establish a postdoctoral research workstation after thorough reviews by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security and the National Postdoctoral Management Committee.

Postdoctoral research workstations are an important reflection of the host unit's research innovation capabilities and serve as a crucial platform for nurturing innovative talent and enhancing academic standards. A host unit is required to have specialized research platforms, high-caliber research teams, excellent research conditions, and necessary living conditions for postdoctoral researchers.

This approval marks a significant milestone for the Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics, indicating a phase of high-quality development in talent cultivation and management.

Mathematics institute empowers key industries

The Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics, established by the Shanghai Office for Advancing Science and Technology Innovation and the Pudong New Area, aims to become a hub for applied mathematics research, the industrialization and commercialization of research achievements, and talent cultivation.

Aligning with national strategic tasks and the needs of key industries in Shanghai, the institute mobilizes mathematical experts nationwide to address critical challenges as well as support national key industries and Shanghai's economic development.

Situated in the Shanghai Zhangjiang National Innovation Center, the institute provides a vibrant research environment with facilities like data centers and research offices. It offers a "research cloud" platform for comprehensive research computing services and supports the engineering, transformation, and incubation of research outcomes.

In its over one year of existence, the Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics has made significant progress in various areas, with its four major laboratories in numerical simulation, data fusion, intelligent supercomputing, and biomedicine achieving a series of advanced research results and earning prestigious qualifications. The institute has been appointed as a governing unit of the Shanghai Biomedical Industry Association, and its researchers have received the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award, as well as registered computer software copyrights and published over 10 papers in high-level journals both domestically and internationally.

Multi-level research resources support talent development

The cultivation and recruitment of high-level interdisciplinary talent are among the key priorities of the Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics. It continuously attracts top-tier research talent, forming a core research team supported by several academicians, where master's and doctoral talent account for 85 percent and researchers account for 94 percent of the total admissions.

The institute has established branch institutes in collaboration with renowned domestic universities such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University, East China Normal University, Tongji University, and Shanghai University, and has also formed partnerships with enterprises, research institutes, and hospitals such as Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China, the Shanghai Supercomputer Center and Ruijin Hospital, furthering cooperation between industries, universities and research institutes. It has undertaken several national major research projects with substantial funding.

Future prospects and recruitment information

Postdoctoral training is a significant aspect of cultivating high-level innovative young talent at the Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics.

In January 2024, through the joint efforts of the institute and various branch institutes, a high-level team of doctoral supervisors was formed to officially launch the application process for the postdoctoral research workstation. Following a series of reviews, the institute recently successfully obtained approval as a national postdoctoral research workstation.

As per the plan, the postdoctoral research workstation will focus on the needs of key industries in Shanghai and is set to recruit postdoctoral researchers in fields such as artificial intelligence and biomedicine in 2025 and 2026, collaborating with the institute's branch institutes for joint training.

Moving forward, the Shanghai Zhangjiang Institute of Mathematics will continue leveraging its innovative research strengths and collaborating with universities to cultivate interdisciplinary talent in line with national strategies and key industry needs. By addressing critical challenges, enhancing independent innovation capabilities, bridging the gap between applied mathematics and industries, the institute aims to contribute to the development of local and national scientific and technological innovation.
